Averroes seeks to ground philosophical theology in Aristotelian premises, by reconciling the treatment of God in metaphysics as a pure intellect with the portrayal of God in Aristotle's Physics as a cause of heavenly motion. Averroes’ solution to this problem appeals to the central Aristotelian distinction between four kinds of cause, namely formal, final, efficient, and material.
